Learn about mental health and suicide, the most up-to-date research on prevention and what we can all do to save lives.

From the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, “L.E.T.S. Save Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Black and African American Communities” is an expert-led presentation to reduce cultural stigma, foster conversations about mental health and raise awareness of suicide prevention for Blacks and African Americans. It was created created with an advisory committee of experts in Black and African American mental health and suicide prevention.

Following this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the scope of suicide among the Black and African American population.
  • Understand the racial and systemic factors that impact suicide in Black and African American communities.
  • Describe suicide risk and protective factors for Black and African American communities.
  • Describe warning signs of suicide.
  • Learn how to get help for someone in a suicidal crisis.
  • Gain confidence in talking to someone about suicide.

L.E.T.S. Save Lives is a Chesterfield County and Virginia State University Black History Month Program.

About the Library

Meadowdale Library’s prairie style architecture inspires admiring comments for the warm and welcoming feeling created by the building - and the staff. Meadowdale is closely connected to its diverse community. A large part of our bilingual and Spanish-language books are at the Meadowdale library, which also hosts a Spanish study hour every week. The Chesterfield Business Suite and small business workshops help local entrepreneurs become successful, while job seekers get help with applications and learning interview and work skills. The beautiful large meeting room with its own kitchen is perfect for workshops and events.
