Explore Richmond's LGBTQ+ history through rare archives, literature, and activism in this engaging, expert-led program. Registration begins Sept. 30.

Richmond’s LGBTQ+ history is rich, complex, and often hidden in plain sight. This program explores the city’s queer past through archival materials, original publications, and decades of community activism.

Local experts Matthew and Anne will share insights from their work with collections across Richmond, highlighting:

The early foundations of a gay community in the city
Richmond’s literary renaissance of the 1920s, which drew queer writers from around the world
The evolution of gay bars and drag culture from the 1950s to the 1990s
Activism, organizations, and newsletters that shaped community life from the 1970s onward
Attendees will also learn about research methods and archival resources available to the public, offering a deeper understanding of how these stories come together to form a holistic view of Richmond’s LGBTQ+ legacy.

About the Presenters:
Matthew is a public historian and research consultant and has worked at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC), where he authored "Growing Strength and Pride, a Guide to LGBTQ+ Materials in the VMHC." Anne is a writer and public historian. As the program specialist at the Library of Virginia, she curated a display on “LGBTQ+ Virginia 100 years ago.”
